Last week brought yet another situation which illustrates that my wife will never, ever be able to fully understand me.

I’m speaking, of course, about my behavior during the Olympic gold medal hockey game between the United States and Canada, which took place on Feb. 28. And before we delve into what happened, some background is in order.

In the midst of all the depressing business closings we’ve seen in Livingston County in the last few years, we’re starting to see a wonderful new trend – old businesses that are reopening.

I have to say that I was more than a little surprised to hear the news last week that Livingston County is the healthiest county in Michigan. I just never realized that driving through roundabouts and eating Howell melons was so good for you.

The "dumbest Survivor of all time" got some more face time on CBS last week.

When last we saw Pinckney's Erik Reichenbach on "Survivor," he was busy making the biggest blunder in the show's history. This took place in early 2008, when Erik was a contestant on "Survivor: Micronesia - Fans vs. Favorites."

"Survivor" fans remember it well. It's doubtful they'll ever forget it.

Doggone you, Steve Jobs. Doggone you. Thanks to you, I'm going to have to go out and get yet another Apple product that I didn't know I needed.

So, in looking ahead to the coming 12 months, these will be the big stories in Livingston County and beyond:

Alright, let's put this to a vote. I'm going to let you guys decide what I should write about today. Your choices are:

1. A detailed analysis of the health-care bill currently being debated by the U.S. Senate.

2. An in-depth, line-by-line look at the Michigan state budget.

3. My colonoscopy.

We're a few days into 2010 now, the second decade of the 21st century, but it's time to take one last look back at the first decade of the 21st century.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to...

Lottie Beth, my angel from heaven.

Amelia Grace, who warms my heart.

My daughter Amelia is a sweet, beautiful, smart, talented girl who has been the joy of my life since the moment she was born. So naturally, I feel sort of bad that I have to disown her now.
