I should warn everyone that I have an open bottle of red wine by my side as I write this week’s recap. You can’t really blame me, can you? This season of American Idol has been horrible enough to drive anyone to drink – if only to help choke down the disappointment of a thousand pitchy notes tumbling from the trembling mouths of reality show stereotypes.

Tuesday night’s show started with Ellen all over Simon and I mean ALL OVER Simon. Ellen’s face was red with passion, Simon’s face was red with mortification and Kara’s face was green with envy.

Tonight was “Ladies Night” and it was made very clear to the 8 remaining female contestants that they needed to bring it on, strut their stuff, show us what they were made of, give America the “Wow Factor,” and have a peak performance.

So, before we begin, can we have a little chat, a little one-on-one, a frank tête-à-tête?

Let’s talk about the birds and the bees.

Carolyn King didn't think it was all that big a deal when she showed up for Little League tryouts in Ypsilanti back in 1973.

She was simply a self-described tomboy - a 12-year-old in pigtails who loved to play baseball. He little brother Greg was going to the tryouts for the Ypsilanti American Little League, so Carolyn decided to tag along.

The league president let her try out - in direct defiance of a Little League rule that tersely said "Girls are not eligible" - and the manager of the Orioles selected her. Carolyn King was officially a Little Leaguer.

I recently had the good fortune to pick up a copy of the Kinks Choral Collection, a new CD of classic songs by the highly esteemed English rock band The Kinks. The songs performed by the group’s main songwriter Ray Davies and a band (The Kinks disbanded in 1996) and a large choir.

Madame Arcati is back in town! And the great Arcati will soon be doing her crazy thing onstage at Howell High School as they are gearing up for a blast from the past with their production of "Blithe Spirit" to be performed March 19 , 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. and March 21 at 2 p.m.

“Cinderelly, Cinderelly, All day long it's Cinderelly” sing the charming little Mice as they help to dress their mistress in the timeless Disney classic, Cinderella. Who doesn’t have fond childhood memories of singing with their little one “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” or the Fairy Godmother’s witty “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo,” especially if your household included any little girls?

“American Idol” has always had good manners and tradition has been that it’s “Ladies first.” America was expecting the ten remaining women to perform but Crystal Bowersox, a favorite to many, had been admitted to the hospital overnight due to “medical complications” and a last minute switcheroo was made. This meant that the ten, some boys and some men, competed one day sooner than they were expecting. Maybe this explained why so many of the boy/men sounded so jittery and nervous. Or it could have been too much Red Bull. Or sleep deprivation.

If you look up “Charm” in the dictionary, there just might be a picture of Sondre Lerche next to it. With songs spanning his six records, the affable 27-year-old with a sweet tenor, whipped through his set with a few stops to banter with the capacity crowd of about 200 people.

“American Idol” was on a real streak. A losing streak. Simon was on his own kind of streak. His brutal yet honest words blazed trails of sorrow for the male contestants.

Grab some coffee because you’re gonna need it to read this sleep inducing recap. But first things first. Thank God Ellen’s hair got fixed! She was so much more herself. Gone was the nervous twitch…Ellen was back!

While Ellen’s nerves were calm, Simon decided to step up the pressure for the already petrified contestants. “If you lose it tonight or if you forget the words, your career is over.”

American Idol went live, got down to business and so did the Top Twelve Girls, the better half of the 24 contestants. Or so I had hoped. Last year’s competition was dominated by males and I was ready for some balance.

During the auditions, with the exception of the likes of Andrew Garcia and Casey James, the women emerged as shining stars. The buzz around town was what a talented group of singers there were for Simon's last season. Unique, distinctive, quirky, sultry, talented way beyond their years were all good descriptors of the female singers.
